#8 - Joe Kane - "The Program"
If I have seen this movie once, I have seen it a 1000 times. Came out about the time I was in high school, hitting the gridiron, getting my @$$ knocked off, so it was watched a great deal back in those days. Joe was a very solid QB. A Heisman hopeful whose season gets interrupted because he likes the bottle a bit too much. He got it honest. His daddy was a drunk, so it ran in his family. That doesn't take away from the fact that when he is on, by damn he is on.
Joe Kane: Let's put the women and children to bed and go lookin' for dinner!
Classic line but probably gets over-used. Nonetheless, I will take a boozing Joe Kane over just about anybody. That's what you want out of your QB with the game on the line; "Just give me the GD ball"

Top Ten Movies About Football - Quarterback Edition
#9 - Mike Winchell - "Friday Night Lights"
I took up this book in high school and absolutely loved it. So dramatic and as far as I am concerned they did a pretty fair job turning it into a movie although the movie it is not entirely accurate. Here you have this no-name QB who is mostly level-headed, but prone to nerves. His play is unspectacular, but effective. He feels a lot of pressure from the town and peers alike. In addition, he isn't really getting any looks from major colleges because the entire team is built around the main man in the backfield, Boobie Miles. Well Boobie's career is cut short due to a knee injury and ole Mike has to step up. They have there bumps and bruises but manage to get into the playoffs and advance to the Texas State Championship Game against the Dallas Carter. Anyway, Winchell is a gamer in my book.
Mike Winchell: This is for the state championship. I love all of ya'll, baby. I love all of ya'll
Mike Winchell: He designed his offense around one player. We're dead.
Brian Chavez: We're not dead. You just need to start throwing the ball.
Don Billingsley: We're dead.

Top Ten Movies About Football - Quarterback Edition
Obviously there will be some debate about this, but after some research and juggling in my mind I narrowed it down to the Ten I would want to be on the field with the game on the line.
#10 - Reno Hightower - "The Best of Times"

Luther Jackson: Uh, two minutes left to kick-off. Time for my last smoke.
Reno Hightower: You lazy jive-ass! You're soft, you're slow and your hands are for shit!
Luther Jackson: Hey, who woke you up?
Reno Hightower: Get on the field and shut up, Luther!
Luther Jackson: Reno, you're a prick, and you always were a prick.
Reno Hightower: Great, great. Now get your ass on the field. NOW!!
You just can't argue with that type of leadership. Giving it and taking it. I mean the guy comes out of retirement from his auto mechanic shop to assist an old classmate, who happens to be a bit of a loser, for a rematch of a game against a cross-town rival and they pull off the upset. Classic stuff.

SPEAKING OF THIS WEEKEND...
It pains me to say it, but MSU actually has a chance against LSU. I know I led you astray with the Florida pick, so take this for what it's worth, MSU will cover the 14 point spread and might actually win the game. LSU has looked very mediocre in their 3 games so far. There is no fire whatsoever. They just seem to be going through the motions, but they're not going through them very well. My prediction right now is that LSU will definitely lose to Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Ole Miss and possibly Arkansas. Auburn and Miss. St. are a tossup. This could all change if LSU somehow finds a way to fix all of their problems. I don't see that happening though. Why do I say this? So when it happens there is no need for you to give me shit because I just told you it would happen, and I actually believe it. Here's hoping for 8-5. That is all.
Weekend and What's Ahead
Well there really isn't much use in putting up a big spread about the Rebels, we didn't really play anybody. I did so the first week because it was the first game of the year. We were supposed to win both of those games by the margin of victory we did. As I said after the Memphis game, I didn't really get an idea of where the Rebels stand as far as a team goes and I reiterate that statement again this week. I was glad to see that the 2nd team and other younger players got to see some action yesterday. This will no doubt benefit them having actually been in a game. But, now the real test begins. We have a short week and a trip to Columbia, SC too take on the Gamecocks. Despite what some people think about the 'Cocks' this is not going to be an easy game. Thursday night, Nationally televised and they have a Top 5 team coming into there house. I know if I was a student there, I would have started drinking and getting ready for this one about 20 minutes ago. Well maybe not. Nonetheless, this is just the beginning because after that we go back on the road to Vandy and then home against Rammer Jammer. All of this sounds favorable on paper but there are no gimmes in this league, even Vandy(they lost to State).
In addition, I looked around briefly last night to try and find out some info about the Rebels on Thursday night ESPN games and those efforts, while mediocre, proved fruitless. From my recollection, we got prison raped by Tennessee in Memphis in 1996 and won a pretty exciting game against Arkansas in Oxford in 1997. I was at both those games and Mac was with me in Memphis. If you need confirmation of my attendance I can give you a list of people or I can show you my college transcript because I failed some test due to attending the games instead of being a student, that's loyalty.
Anyway, while I don't agree with what everything Mac said about the Florida/Tennessee game he was right about one thing. Florida didn't look that good. Maybe there is some parity in the SEC this year, where in years past there has been one or two teams to beat. However, based on the polls, the West is where it is at with Bama, Rebs, and LSU Tigers living and breathing in the Top 10. Do I think the Rebels are one of those teams to beat? Not sold on it yet, and it would be entirely foolish to make an assessment like that at any point in the season, regardless of who we play. I just hope we can avoid the upset bug over the next two weeks and start looking a little more complete. Hotty Toddy!!!

WHAT DID WE JUST LEARN
If you are expecting me to come on here and say that Tennessee is better than I gave them credit for you are mistaken. What I learned today is that Florida is not as good as I thought they were. The loss of Percy Harvin was a bigger hit than I expected. I knew he was good, but what I did not realize was how good he made the other receivers look. They have no one that can go out and give defensive backfields fits this year. That is gonna hurt them in the long run because Tebow is not the kind of QB that can just sit back there and thread the needle all day. They also don't have anyone besides Tebow who can run between the tackles. The defense, which was supposed to dominate after getting all 11 starters back from last year looked kind of soft. All Tennessee did all day was RUN, RUN, SCREEN, and it worked alot better than it should have. At times the Gators could not stop it. This tells me that their defense is soft and a power team can beat them. Finesse teams will play right into their strength which is their DB's. By the way, Washington just beat USC so now I feel alot better about LSU's first game.

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER SEASON 10: HEAVYWEIGHTS STARTS TONIGHT
The new season of The Ultimate Fighter starts tonight at 9 pm on Spike. (Channel 27 for those of you in "the Wood") This season should definitely be interesting with Kimbo Slice on the show. Personally I think Roy "Big Country" Nelson will win but we'll see. Also, Rampage Jackson and Rashaud Evans are the two coaches and there is no love lost between these two. As you can see on the video below, they are jawing at each other before they even meet the fighters. Here is the first 8 minutes of the show tonight. Enjoy.
